Our New Community Garden

We started off by finding land that suited our garden needs.
  • We found the best spot: flat, sunny soil to enrich the land site.

We mobilized the community's help.
  • There were so many different tasks that need completing so ask for volunteers to help with responsibilities such as: building planting boxes, prepping the ground/soil, making a compost pile, and fencing the garden.

We made a maintenance plan.
  • Determining what we wanted to plant and when was important, especially when it depends on what zone the garden resides in. Determining which plants don’t work together or are companion plants (plants that assist in the growth of other plants). We made sure to know which plants would need sun and which ones would prosper in the shade. We chose lettuce, kale and chard for our shaded areas.
  • Since we knew the number of families the garden may need to support we chose vegetables such as beans, lettuce, tomatoes and peppers that can yield a higher number of produce to feed a large group.

Our upkeep and management.
  • After planting everything we made a schedule of when the garden would be watered, weeded, and fertilized if needed.

Creating a presentable space.
  • The space we chose to put the garden in had seats nearby or so the members could not only get food but sit, rest, share and appreciated the beauty of their hard work.
  • For fun we added small plantings outside of the garden boxes. Here we used rosemary in one corner area and in another we added sunflower seeds.

It’s Harvest Time.
  • We can now enjoy the benefits of eating healthy foods.
